AMD Launches Athlon 64 X2 6400+ Black Edition
As discussed two weeks ago, AMD has managed to squeeze an extra 200Mhz out of the old 90nm manufacturing process. Although that was a Socket F Opteron processor, DailyTech is reporting that yesterday AMD officially launched the
Athlon 64 X2 6400+ Black Edition, running at a blazing 3.2Ghz.
Here’s what they had to say:
“AMD today silently resuscitated its 90nm Windsor core with a bump in clock speed in the form of the Athlon 64 X2 6400+. The latest Athlon 64 X2 runs at 3.2 GHz – higher than any available Core 2 Duo offering. Each core has access to its own 1MB of L2 cache.
AMD labels the new Athlon 64 X2 6400+ as the Black Edition, in matching black packaging. The new model does not have the lower 89 watt TDP as the upcoming Windsor refresh. Instead, the processor carries a 125 watt TDP rating, nearly three times higher than the Athlon X2 BE-series.”
In general, I suspect this chip will perform between the Core 2 Duo E6420 and E6600. I’m not entirely sure what makes it a “Black Edition”, but perhaps it's because it represents the last addition to the Athlon 64 X2 lineup.
