Power Supply Review Roundup – Kingwin, OCZ, Tuniq & More

Sat 2008-10-04 - Posted by Patrick "MACMAC" MacMillan
bit-tech, Hardware Secrets, Rbmods, TechwareLabs, Virtual-Hideout, X-bit Labs, and XSReviews have reviewed a wide range of power supplies from BFG, Enermax, Lian Li, OCZ, Tuniq, and much more!

Let’s see what they had to say:

  • bit-tech News: OCZ's EliteXStreme 800W PSU:

“Sniffing around there's not much in the 800W range we'd buy to be honest - we know the OCZ is certainly quiet, has excellent voltages and a belly of quality PC Power innards which we know does tick quite a few boxes of our readers. Our personal choice would still be the TX750W still - we prefer its choice and quality of cables and the rugged external design is a little different, but the OCZ EliteXStream 800W is not that far behind. Basically, if you really want a very quiet high wattage PSU with sleek black looks and the cable arrangement suits your build, then the OCZ EliteXStream 800W is a good buy.”

  • Hardware Secrets: Kingwin Mach 1 ABT-700MA1S 700 W Power Supply Review:

“The only real weak point of this product is its efficiency. You will have to install this power supply on a PC pulling up to 420 W in order to get a relatively decent efficiency. If your PC pulls more than that, we strongly recommend you getting a different product as it will make a big difference on your electricity bill, especially if you are building a high-end PC.”

  • Rbmods: Lian Li Ps-a750gb Power Supply Review:

“If we look at this power supply we can clearly see that it performs very well and it is a high quality product like the rest of the Lian Li products. It has some main features that makes it stable and high performing as we discussed earlier in the review. I don't have a price on the unit yet but I think that it might be priced a bit higher than other 750W units on the market but the performance and silence will cover up for the higher price. The unit is extremely silent, I have not heard anything this silent for a long time. I could barely hear it when I put my ear down to it, all the chipset fans, cpu cooler etc crowded the silent noise from the PSU. I will for sure give this unit our editors choice award for a VERY high and good performing PSU.”

  • TechwareLabs: FSP Group Everest 80PLUS 700 Watt PSU:

“The Everest 80 Plus 700 is a power supply that really holds up to it's specifications, proving to be a great power supply. It looks cool, is silent, and performs perfectly. The 80%+ certification holds true and we would definitely recommend this PSU to anyone looking to build a system featuring all the best parts. However, for $149.99, you may not be able to find a better PSU for the money.”

  • TechwareLabs: Tuniq Ensemble 1200 Watt PSU:

“The Tuniq Ensemble is the largest power supply this reviewer has reviewed to date, and by far the most impressive. The Ensemble is not short on power, supplied cables connections, quite during heavy loads and is a super high on efficiency at 87%. With all the connections and Wattage, anyone could hook up every peripheral they own to this PSU and not only will the Ensemble be able to power it all, it will do it quietly, efficiently and not turn into a space heater while do so. This may not be the power supply for the masses due to its weight, cost, and physical size which limits the Ensemble to full size cases, but it is a PSU which if none of those items listed don't stop you, then you won't be let down by this PSU performance. This is one AWESOME piece of hardware!”

  • Virtual-Hideout: Tuniq Ensemble 1200w Power Supply Review:

“The Tuniq Ensemble 1200 Watt Power Supply is the single largest PSU tested to date. There's obviously an enormous amount of power produced by the unit as well as an extremely respectable power efficiency rating. When purchasing this kind of PSU, you expect stable, reliable voltages for optimal system performance and it does not fail to deliver either. Granted it's large and heavy, but again, when you need this kind of power, comfort is the last thing you should concerned about. It's the Hercules of power supplies.”

  • X-bit Labs: ATX Power Supply Units Roundup. Part X:

“I guess this test session is the rare occasion when I can definitely name one absolute leader. It is the Enermax MODU82+ power supply. Besides neat assembly and superb electric properties, it proved to be so quiet that it was virtually silent at low and medium loads and quite comfortable at full load. Surely, the MODU82+ won’t be the noisiness component in a system that can load half-a-kilowatt power supply.”

  • XSReviews: XSpice Croon 750w Review:

“So today I was indeed very pleased with the outcome of the XSpice Croon 750w. It's performance was good with some nice tight rails (save perhaps the 12v, though that wasn't too bad) along with some good stability when switching from idle to load states. It was able to handle our relatively hefty test rig, and did so almost noiselessly. Hell, the price isn't bad either.

The only real let downs with this unit are a few features that it would have been nice to see, like native 8pin PCI-e cables, or perhaps modular cabling, but then that probably would have bumped the price up a little.
Bottom line, if you're in the market for a new PSU and you fancy something a bit different with everything that the big boys have, make sure to check out the XSpice Croon; it's a good piece of kit.”

If you cannot find a power supply that fits your needs in this roundup, then you may as well give up…or just buy a Corsair HX620W!
