AMD 785G Chipset Launched

Tue 2009-08-04 - Posted by Patrick "MACMAC" MacMillan
The AMD 785G chipset has officially been launched. As the successor to the immensely popular 780G, this new chipset features an updated Radeon HD 4200 DX10.1 integrated graphics processor (IGP) and support for DDR3 system memory.

    • Guru3D: AMD 785G chipset review - ECS A785GM-M tested:

"Well then, from the 780 or 790 chipset point of view, really not a lot has changed with the AMD 7858G chipset... unless you are into building yourself a nice HTPC or work PC with high-definition content playback in mind.

Despite that, personally I'm quite excited by this release. I myself am a huge HTPC buff and the integrated R4200 graphics chipset offers full UVD 2.0 compatibility. As such you gain a lot of cool new features that make building an HTPC very simple and cheap. I mean, you do not need to purchase a graphics card whatsoever as the embedded GPU not only accelerates, but now also allows you to post process the media file and thus enhance image quality at a much better scale. I love that. I do hope that AMD will launch its next chipset with a couple or more shader processors though. For post processing in software like Media Player Classic HT at 1080P this embedded GPU is borderline capable if you flick on some shaders like image sharpening."

    • HotHardware: AMD 785G Chipset Launch: ASUS and Gigabyte Tested:

"Throughout our benchmarks, the new AMD 785G chipset performed very well. Compared to other AMD chipsets, it certainly performs well considering its price point, even keeping up with the premium priced 790FX for the most part. Compared to competing chipsets in the Intel camp, the AMD 785G looks like a very good value. In the general performance tests, the 785G kept pace with the whole field, and in gaming tests, the 785G showed that its IGP was clearly superior to Intel's GMA X4500. The GeForce 9300 outperforms the 785G in some games, but not by a wide margin and the 785G was able to come out on top in Half-Life 2.

We also found that the 785G's integrated Radeon HD 4200 is a very capable overclocker. We were able to double the core clock frequency without much effort. The Radeon HD 4200 seems to have a huge amount of headroom left for overclockers to discover. Overall, the AMD 785G chipset performed very well indeed, especially considering its price range."

    • PC Perspective: AMD 785G Chipset Review: Integrated Evolved:

"Video playback received a huge boost with this product, and the full benefits of it have not been adequately tested so far. Once I receive a few extra home theater pieces where I can comprehensively test out the full audio and visual functionality of this chip, then I will post a standalone article which covers in depth the full multi-media properties of the 785G chipset. This could be a serious boon for HTPC enthusiasts looking for a high quality, low power solution to power their entertainment centers.

I found very few negatives in the testing that I was able to do, and since it is more of an evolution than revolution, the 785G has a lot of software and driver support as is. The only real issue that I found was that we still suffer from the AHCI issues in Vista with the SB710 southbridge. In fact, AHCI performance in all OS’s is pretty lackluster at best, and it is usually a better idea just to stick with IDE functionality. Hopefully the upcoming SB800 that is supposed to show up early next year will fix these problems."

    • TweakTown: GIGABYTE MA785GPM-UD2H 785G AM3 Motherboard:

"AMD’s chipset lineup has no intention of stopping. In fact, it’s proven they are willing to keep things going. AMD’s 7 series chipsets have been extremely impressive and the 785G chipset is nothing short of this either.

While we have only tested the first board we’ve been given so far, along with this one being Micro ATX, we don’t know the full potential yet. And due to the limited time of testing we didn’t get a lot of time to check out the overclocking or onboard graphics. However, we are coming back to a second article later next month with testing of the 785G’s IGP vs. the 790GX’s, so stay tuned for that one."

    • Legit Reviews: ASUS M4A785TD-V EVO 785G Motherboard Preview:

"As you can see from the image above the ASUS M4A785TD-V EVO is a full size ATX motherboard that features the AM3 processor socket by AMD. The M4A785TD-V EVO uses Stack Cool 3+ and is part of the Xtreme Design initiative that ASUS is currently promoting. The board has a very clean layout and features an 8+2 phase power design. AMD and ASUS asked us not to go into any more detail than what can be seen from pictures of the board, so we can only give you a brief overview of the M4A785TD-V EVO. This motherboard features SidePort Memory, which is an individual on-board DDR3 chip that acts as a memory buffer for the integrated Radeon 4200 graphics. Since the board has the Radeon 4200 graphics on-board it also sports ATI Hybrid CrossFireX technology."

    • PC Perspective: MSI AMD 785GM-E65 Motherboard Preview:

"It certainly seems that MSI is attempting to keep up with the Gigabyte's and Asus' of the world, and from what I am seeing with their latest motherboard products, corners are not being cut. When I received the 785GM-E65 today, I was more than pleasantly surprised at the seeming quality of the build and components that were used with this board. The overall design, layout, and spacing is also quite pleasant considering that this IS a micro-ATX motherboard."

The new 785G chipset definitely appears to be a well-rounded product, and arguably the best solution for a Home Theater PC (HTPC) or any non-gaming oriented system.
